It was 1994 and somehow I learned of the existence of a Kinks mailing list,
probably in a Compuserve forum. I sent a message to Neil at "otten@quark.UMD.EDU" and he kindly
registered my Compuserve address in the list.
Compuserve and later a
very hard to get Internet account (128 kbps for the whole country) became a
gateway to learn about and get involved with other Kinks fans. And what
fans! Everything I ever wanted to know was there for the asking, if the
answer wasn't already in the archives which I promptly downloaded and avidly
read. For a Kinks fan living in Venezuela it was a miracle.
My first
recollection of Neil beyond our registration messages is a comment he made
in a message saying something like "If you love the Kinks enough to have
found this list...". Over the years I learned of his family, his job and his
views.
Neil's work and kindness during all these years have provided me
not only information and opportunities to share my love for the Kinks,
but even emotional nourishment during hard times. I consider several
members of Neil's list my personal friends.
I am deeply grateful to
Neil and the community he created and supports.
